100% Capture Rate on Suicune in Pokemon Go

I did my sixth Suicune raid today and also caught my sixth Suicune today, how did I do it? Let's find out.

First of all, here is the screenshot from my Pokedex with 6/6 Suicune caught. Honestly, I would be happy to have 4/5 and going forward something like 8 or 9 out of 10 raids as well. Why is that we will find out in the post below as well.
100% capture rate on suicune

Capture Rate

To maximise our chances of catching a raid boss, we need to know the minimum and maximum values of capture rates. Here is a great chart by Reddit user u/BiscottiePippen which explains about the capture rates of Tier 4 and Tier 5 raids. As we are talking about Legendary Beasts and Suicune, in particular, we will focus on that in this post.
Catch rate on legendary pokemon

As you can see, Legendary Beasts have the lowest capture rate of 0.02 or 2% along with Lugia in Pokemon Go. That means if you hit it with a Premier ball, you will catch it 2 out of 100 times. Too low right? But don't worry, that's where the other bonuses as in the chart above come into play. Here are all the bonuses you can apply while catching a raid boss.

Type Medals

In your profile, you can see the medal for various types. Here is the good part, for the Legendary bosses, you probably have gold medals for their types already. The difficult medals are Dragon, Steel, Dark and Fighting types. I can teach you some secrets like catching Murkrows for dark type medal but let's keep that for a separate post. Now for Suicune, you only need water type medal which is probably the easiest to get the normal and flying type. A lot of common Pokemon like Goldeen, Horsea, Krabby, Poliwag, etc. give you water type medal. So, based on the chart above, you can multiply the 2% catch rate with 1.3 for the gold medal for water type and there you have it, increased catch rate.

Berries

I will need to jump to berries instead of ball type because of the Premier balls which have the same 1x capture rate as the Pokeballs. Golden berries are very significant. They provide 2.5x bonus compare to 1.5 by regular Razzberries or no bonus at all by other berries. That is why I will advise against using golden razzberries against wild Pokemon catches and also against feeding them at gyms. Better lose a Pokemon at the gym than a raid boss running away.

Curve Ball

There is another bonus to stack on top of others, i.e. Curve Ball. It has a 1.7x multiplier attached with it. Here is a great video by Pokemon Go YouTuber Trainer Tips on how to throw a curve ball: How to throw a curve ball in Pokemon Go. If you are serious about catching those legendaries in Pokemon Go, learn to throw curveballs as they are significant enough like many other bonuses to decide whether or not you will capture the raid boss.

Throw bonus

This is a bit controversial because of the curve ball bonus not awarded accurately in Pokemon Go. Fortunately for me, I have not encountered this bug too much where curve ball bonus is not given. Anyways, there are 3 types of throw bonuses: Nice, Great and Excellent. There are two mechanics at play here and you will need a lot of practice to master this technique. First, when you catch a Pokemon, you can notice a circle increasing and decreasing in size all the time. You need to get the circle the smallest of size possible as there is another bonus associated here. From the largest circle size to smallest circle size, the multiplier varies from 1x to 2x. You will most likely never have the perfect 2x multiplier here but anything above 1.7x is fine. You need to land your ball, in this case, the Premier ball in the exact centre of the catch circle and based on how big or small the circle is, you will be awarded Nice, Great or Excellent throws. Having a small circle along with landing in the exact middle is difficult but possible, I caught 3 out of 6 Suicunes with such throws. If you are having difficulty in doing this: Here is an excellent video by ProdigiesNation on getting excellent throws on raid bosses.

My secret Tips and Tricks on catching Legendary Beasts

What I have talked above is general tips on increasing your chances on catching raid bosses. I'll give you some tips now that have helped me in getting that 100% capture rate on Suicune.

Gym Control

Let's get the more common tip out of our way first. If you control the gym, i.e. your team has their Pokemon assigned in the gym where the raid is going to happen then you get 2 extra Premier balls to catch the raid boss even if you haven't added a Pokemon in gym personally. When the capture rates are low, these 2 balls are insanely helpful.

Team Damage Bonus

This is one of my secrets as I get 13-14 balls a lot of time to catch the raid boss because of this bonus. How do you achieve this? Create a raid group around your team i.e. try to do raids with only your team member, team valor in my case. Even if other teams join in your group for a raid, you'll still get the damage bonus. This number varies from1 to 3 and I almost every time end up with 3 hence increased catch rate.

Personal Damage Bonus

This is extremely important and I always try to max out on this bonus. The trick here is to not to let your 6 Pokemon team die during a raid battle. I achieve this by having an ideal mix of damage and defence in my team so that I get the damage bonus but also do not run out of Pokemon and forced to re-enter. When you rejoin a raid battle, all your damage is reset, that means if the raid ends as soon as you rejoin, you get 0 bonus from damage and may affect your team damage as well. To counter this, here is my team:
1. Level 33 Dragonite
2. Level 31 Jolteon
3. Level 31 Jolteon
4. Level 32 Exeggutor
5. Level 32 Venusaur
6. Level 32 Meganium

The damage spike is provided by the Jolteons but they are weak and die early. Dragonite is very tanky and sometimes remains alive half the time of the entire battle. Meganium and Venusaur are tanky too. Exeggutor is a great attacker and resists water moves. Also, notice that all of these Pokemon are at their ideal move set with the maximum possible damage. Also, they were all at Level 30 when I did my first Suicune raid. To make sure I can fight with smaller teams and also do not end up with 6 Pokemon dead in a single boss fight, I powered them up further.

If you follow all these tricks, then with 13 Premier balls, you can achieve catch rate chance of little above 90%. But if you have thrown great throw instead of excellent, have only 10 premier balls, then the catch rate can come down to 75%. I can say this 75% is definitely achievable especially if you miss no balls. The Legendary beasts are easier to capture than birds because of their positioning and movement.
